This project for the Historic Village of Cortez in Manatee County, Florida features the preservation of the 1912 Cortez Schoolhouse.

The preservation initiative includes adapting the building for reuse as a community center.

SCOPE

Exterior and interior restoration of historic building to be used as a Community Center.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The classroom spaces are preserved for use as a display area for exhibits relating to the life of the historic fishing village.
  • The Auditorium and grounds are used as a community space for weddings, banquets, concerts, festivals and meetings.
  • The courtyard gardens reflect the renovations of the artist who bought the property in the 1970s. The garden, fountain and sculptures were preserved for their artistic quality and as a testament to the work of Robert Sailor, an internationally renowned artist.
